Please join fellow BAWSC participants for a spring hike to get our legs and lungs into shape to hit the water this year!
This year's hike will take place in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, located just north of Santa Cruz, in Felton. This state park is well known for providing calm reflection among ancient giant redwoods and sunny sandhill ridges. We will meet at the Visitor Center by 10:30am.
Directions & Parking - The park is located at 101 North Big Trees Park Road, Felton. From Hwy 17, take the Mt. Herman Road exit. Take Mt. Herman Road to the end at Graham Hill Road, turn right onto Graham Hill Road, then turn left onto Hwy 9. The entrance for day use is 2 miles on the left. There is a parking lot near the visitor's center. Parking is $10 for a vehicle, and $9 for seniors 62 or older. There is no BAWSC event fee for this event.
Please try and carpool to this event using the club message board to arrange car-pools.
Dogs - dogs are allowed in picnic areas and on the Meadow Trail, Pipeline Road, Graham Hill Trail and Powder Mill Fire Road. Dogs are not allowed on the old growth Redwood Grove Loop Trail or the River Trail. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
Hike Then Lunch - We can meet in the parking area by the Visitor Center. Let's try to start the hike at 10:45 (give or take). There are two hike options. both start at the Visitor's Center where we will meet. The Redwood Grove Loop Trail is a mostly flat, 0.8 mile trail, the trail is marked on the map below in yellow with green dots. For those who want a longer hike, the River Trail also leaves from the Visitor Center, and is an out and back trail, that I would recommend 1.5 miles out, then turn around and 1.5 miles back. If you want to hike with your dog, please check the park's website for a list of trails that dogs are allowed on.
Lunch - Let's try to finish the hike you choose and meet back at the Visitor's Center by 12:30 pm, and then find picnic tables to hang out for lunch. Please bring your own food/drinks, and some to share if you like.
Roaring Camp Railroad after Lunch - 1:30pm Train - the Roaring Camp Railroad is right next to the Visitor Center parking lot. For those interested, we can walk there after lunch and take a fun train ride through the redwoods. The train ride is $44.47 for adults, and $28.57 for kids under 12, kids under 2 are free. You can purchase tickets in advance at https://roaringcamp.com. The last train is at 1:30pm, I recommend buying a ticket in advance if you are interested in doing the train ride.
Last Day to Register or cancel a registration: 5/14/26
Please plan on being in the park parking lot by 10:30 a.m. We will start hiking at 10:45 a.m. sharp. so anyone who has not arrived by then will be hiking on their own.
